Recruiting College-Age Leaders

Several of us from our area met yesterday to discuss how we can do a bang up job of recruiting college leaders for our high school & middle school ministry teams.  These were some of our ideas.

  1. Personally call (over & over again) every Area Director in the state and find out if they have any kids coming our way next fall.
  2. Personally calling those kids, introducing ourselves, & offer to meet up and help them get settled when they get here.
  3. Create a Facebook group for those potential leaders to get plugged in now.
  4. Make sure our current college students do the calling.  They are much more cool than we are.
  5. Plan social events way in advance so we can tell them about it during our calls.
  6. Be an on campus presence at UCF (our local university) with table displays at orientation & club fairs, and (the one I’m very excited about) consistent YL tailgate parties for all home football games.

These are just a few ideas, but one of the most important things that came out of the meeting was not what we plan to do, but the spirit & motivation through which we do the “things”.  We decided to make it very clear to everyone that our goal is not to recruit leaders.  Instead our goal is to build disciples – whether they decided to become leaders or not.  Our mission in this effort, at UCF, is to help these young college students grow spiritually – to get them plugged in to Christian community.

Hopefully some of them will feel called to do ministry, and some of those will feel called to do it with us.

The next few podcasts will be focusing on recruiting leaders, so you can look forward to more on this topic.
